In the beginning of 1900, all monitoring of dam safety was made in person and manually recorded to paper. Today, all dams in Finland are centrally managed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.environment.fi\/en-US\/Waters\/Use_of_water_resources\/Dams_and_dam_safety\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">one authority<\/span><\/a> and common information system. Dam owners fill in to the information system all information relevant to dam safety, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-text-color has-very-dark-gray-color wp-block-list\"><li>Technical details and dam design<\/li><li>Hydrological dimensions<\/li><li>Surveillance program as expected by the Dam Safety Law<\/li><li>Risk Assessment documents<\/li><li>Safety Plans<\/li><li>Dam Condition Assessments<\/li><li>Fixed-term Inspection reports<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-very-dark-gray-color wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, dam owner can provide details like information on abnormal situations and renovation plans. Easy reporting and follow-up ensure continuously up-to-date information for all stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-very-dark-gray-color wp-block-paragraph\">Also technical tools for dam safety have seen a drastical development. Remote surveillance and automation solutions provide efficient tools for securing both structural and environmental safety of dams. New water quality parameters can be monitored remotely on real-time for better insight to reservoir status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignfull has-2-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finnish Dam Safety Model &#8211; holistic and integrated approach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-very-dark-gray-color wp-block-paragraph\">Idea behind the Finnish Dam Safety Model is not only monitoring the problems once they occur, but <strong>identification and prevention of risks beforehand<\/strong>. With decades of experience, it is possible to identify parameters that reflect the overall status of the dam. Additional to dam structure, environmental impact can be monitored and mitigated with the help of advanced technology and knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-very-dark-gray-color wp-block-paragraph\">Dam Safety is a major concern of <strong>several stakeholders<\/strong>: not just the dam operators, but also regional and national authorities. It is therefore important to provide accurate real-time information to specified needs of each user. When all monitoring data is gathered to the same platform, different dashboards can be customized for each user type. Some key parameters to monitor can be for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-text-color has-very-dark-gray-color wp-block-list\"><li>Dam structure safety<ul><li>Stability and movements<\/li><li>Water pore pressure, inclinometry<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Water quality<ul><li>Online early warning systems<\/li><li>Turbidity, trace metals, conductivity, pH&#8230;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Sedimentation<ul><li>E.g.
